The year started with concerns about the shortage of lace workers now available. The Post reported that a ‘twist hand was now having to do his own work’. Prior to this a twist hand would have another worker with him to help.
By July such issues were overshadowed by the plain net makers agreeing to strike over bonus payments. They did not receive bonus payments on all the goods that they made and strike notices were issued to their employer. Messrs Hicking (Lace Makers) was charged with breaching the Factories Act by employing women after 7pm. A factory inspector found several women working the 7pm – 7am shift. The court refused to register a conviction, stating that it was in the national interest to have workers around the clock at that time.
Although there were disputes between employers and employees, they generally stood together for the good of the war effort. Many firms worked during the Whitsuntide holiday in order to keep up production.
The War Office decided to release 1,000 attested men nationally to work in a municipal capacity. Nottingham used its allocation of men to remove rubbish, a welfare issue identified by the Medical Officer of Health for Nottingham Dr Boobbyer.
In February, Mason Brothers, bakers, had a fire at their premises on the corner of Russell Street and Tennyson Street. The firms’ horses, stabled next to the bakery, were led to safety. Mason Brothers was not insured for the loss of a large quantity of flour, damage to the ground floor and the loss of the upper storey. The loss was estimated at £400 –£500.
